Sometimes it isn’t just bills!

The paperback proofs of First Fire have finally arrived (yay!) Actually this is the second set, since the original proofs never arrived. When I emailed them about it, CS were good enough to ship a second set on 3 day priority (they were only printed on the 22nd). So good on ya CreateSpace. 🙂

This one is actually thick enough to get a title on the spine! (it’s 100 pages & change). The ebook version is, of course, still free and exclusive to my mailing list – to sign up.

So here’s the obligatory blurry selfie…

Cracking on…

The big news today is that the edit for Hunted is back from David Wailing. So I shall be working my way through that over the course of the next few days. I had a quick read through his report, and at least he hasn’t told me to completely rewrite the third act!

FC3 is coming on apace, all the major plot points are worked out, and the first few chapters written. Socko3 has gone on hold for the moment, although I still anticipate having the 1st draft by the end of July.

I have in my hands the proofs for the CreateSpace edition of Wanted. It’s been updated to match the current Kindle edition (which has been updated to reflect the new CreateSpace edition…) It’s still 6×9 format with the same front cover, although I raised the size of the typeface slightly (11.5pt Minion Pro, if anyone really wants to know), which has increased the page count to 311. There’s a new back cover blurb too.

Amazon have dropped the price on their last few copies of the FeedARead edition, down to £5.63 (which is basically ‘at cost’) – UK store only. Get them while you can!

Of cute cats and piracy

So imagine my plight gentle reader; I’ve got to publicise a book. Now I happen to think it’s a remarkably fine book, I hope that you’ll all think it’s a remarkably fine book, buy it and enjoy reading it. Yet unless you hear about it, you’re not going to have the opportunity. So what can I do?

Well let’s start with the book. It’s Science Fiction and here’s the blurb.

“Join intergalactic investigator Haldar Drom as he cleans up criminal scum in Justice 4.1.

When a journalist is shot down in a backward area of Tsarina, Haldar Drom of the Governor’s Investigation Office is sent to investigate. He uncovers a hidden medical facility dedicated to the production of Abate, a drug used for population control, as well as evidence of the implantation of pre-created embryos in women brought to Tsarina for the purpose. He also discovers a deeper plot with far reaching political ramifications. A senior member of the Governors family, Doran Stilan is running a personal feud with the major pirate/Starmancer Wayland Strang. Indeed he begins to suspect that Stilan may even be angling to take Strang’s place. The medical facility is destroyed after it is attacked by mercenaries hired by Strang, and Drom has to travel off world to untangle the treads of the conspiracy. Arriving back on Tsarina, he has to deal with a failed Starmancer attack, punish the guilty and arrange for Doran Stilan to get what’s coming without undermining the position of the Governor. To do this, he’ll need skill, know-how and a whole lot of luck to ensure that the guilty face justice.”

So how do I publicise it. Well I have a Facebook page for it, (I’m nothing if not conventional) and I can release snippets of the book on that page. I can tantalise and tease and provoke interest so that by the time the book is released (1st March 2014) an increasingly frustrated public will order so many copies Amazon with crash. (Or not as the case may be.) This page can be viewed in all its creative genius at

But between you and me it didn’t go entirely well. The first posts, witty and imaginative though they were, just didn’t get seen; perhaps a couple of dozen worthy souls took time out to peruse them. Something had to be done. It was obvious what I needed, I needed pictures.

My problem here is twofold. Haldar Drom is an awfully fine chap, but he’s a dashed long way away, spatially and chronologically. This may explain why he’s awfully slow at sending me any images.

The second problem is that I don’t have a camera or even a phone with a camera. I live in mobile phone black spot without reception. My phone is an antiquated Nokia that lives switched off in a drawer. So where was I going to get photos.

It was when I was looking for something else I saw a picture that was just so Tsarina it could have been taken there. I borrowed it and put it on the Facebook page with an appropriate caption. Instead of the score of faithful who drifted in over a week or so to read the deathless prose, fifty odd turned up within the next twenty-four hours to marvel at the pictures. Problem solved.

I realise that there is an irony in publicising a book on fighting space piracy using ‘liberated’ photos. My defence is that I’m using them in a sympathetic manner milud.

Some say I have no scruples; it’s true I’ve even worked in cute cat pictures! But I have also managed to work with others. My book has a scene set in a nightclub. So two glamorous lady singers of my acquaintance provided me the photos and links and agreed to appear on the blog (and perform in the nightclub.)
